Traveling to Mainz

Don't forget to check the validity of your passport and any visa requirements you might have to enter the European Union.

By Air

  • Frankfurt International Airport (FRA)
    • transit to Mainz central station by train (EC, ICE, IC, RE, RB) or S-Bahn (line S8)
    • duration: 20-40 minutes (depending on type of train)
    • ticket price: €4.55-13.00 (as of Jan 5th; depending on type of train)

  • Frankfurt Hahn Airport (HHN)
    • transit to Mainz central station by bus (Hahn Airport Shuttle)
    • duration: 75 minutes
    • ticket price: €13.50 (as of Jan 5th)
    • To travel from Frankfurt Hahn Airport to Mainz by car, take highway B 50 to get to autobahn A 61, on-ramp "Rheinböllen" direction "Ludwigshafen"; at "Dreieck Nahetal" change to autobahn A 60 direction Mainz, leave autobahn A 60 at exit "Saarstraße."

By Train

The City of Mainz has one central and multiple other train stations. Schedule information is provided by Deutsche Bahn.

By Car

Please check the attached map (pdf) for driving directions.

From the west (i.e. from direction Bonn/Cologne)
• Travel autobahn A 60 crossing "Autobahn-Dreieck Mainz" direction Darmstadt.
• Leave autobahn A 60 at exit "Mainz-Finthen".
• Follow the street sign "Saarstraße/Innenstadt" straight ahead through the traffic circle "Europaplatz".
• Take exit "Universität".

From the east (i.e. from direction Würzburg/Darmstadt)
• Travel autobahn A 60 crossing "Autobahn-Dreieck Rüsselsheim" OR travel autobahn A 63 crossing "Autobahnkreuz Mainz" to get to autobahn A 60 direction Bingen.
• Leave autobahn A 60 at exit "Mainz-Finthen".
• Follow the street sign "Saarstraße/Innenstadt" straight ahead through the traffic circle "Europaplatz".
• Take exit "Universität".

From the north (i.e. from direction Kassel)
• Follow autobahn A 66.
• At "Schiersteiner Kreuz" change to autobahn A 643 direction Mainz.
• Follow autobahn A 643 to "Autobahn-Dreieck Mainz" and change here to autobahn A 60 direction Darmstadt.
• Leave autobahn A 60 at exit "Mainz-Finthen".
• Follow the street sign "Saarstraße/Innenstadt" straight ahead through the traffic circle "Europaplatz".
• Take exit "Universität".

Parking on campus is available only with special permission. Please see the site map (pdf) for parking in the nearest vicinity of the campus. Parking is also available at the near-by football stadium, which is about 200 meters from the University’s main entrance.

By Bus

The easiest way to come to Mainz University is to take one of the following bus lines from Mainz Central Station ("Hauptbahnhof"): Line 6 (direction "Marienborn")
Line 6A (direction "Bretzenheim/Gutenberg-Center")
Line 54 (direction "Lerchenberg/Brucknerstraße")
Line 55 (direction "Finthen/Theodor-Heuss-Straße")
Line 56 (direction "Münchfeld")
Line 57 (direction "Münchfeld")
Line 58 (direction "Wackernheim")
Line 64 (direction "Gonsenheim/Lennebergplatz")
Line 65 (direction "Jugendwerk")
Line 68 (direction "Lerchenberg/Hindemithstraße")
Line 69 (direction "Fachhochschule ü. Uni-Campus")
Line 90 (direction "Lerchenberg/Menzelstraße"
Line 91 (direction "Finthen/Poststraße")

You can get out at the following bus stops:
• "Universität" (main entrance, Forum universitatis)
• "Friedrich-von-Pfeiffer-Weg" (Philosophicum)
• "Botanischer Garten" (Botanic Garden, Sports Institute)
• "Ackermannweg" (main car entrance)
• "Backhaushohl" (Sports Institute)
• "Staudinger Weg" (main cafeteria)
• "Duesbergweg" (Medical Institutes, Natural Sciences Institutes)
• "Koblenzer Straße" (main car entrance)

On Campus

Note that the Philosophicum (bus stop "Friedrich-von-Pfeiffer-Weg") is where the conference takes place (lecture halls P1, P2 and P5, to the right and left of the entrance of the Philosophicum). This is also in close vicinity (5 min walking distance) of the School of Music where the concerts are.

Basically everything on the JGU campus is within walking distance. Please check the generic JGU Campus Map (pdf) to find your way. The map also indicates the locations of the various bus stops, and the different bus lines can be found on the MGV route map (pdf).
